Vegan White Bread

Writer's picture: Marisa's Vegan RecipesMarisa's Vegan Recipes

This was my first time making White Bread. The recipe made 2 small loaves of delicious, fluffy white bread.

With us all being in isolation at the moment, we are trying our best not to go to the supermarket more than once a week. As you can imagine, running out of bread midweek was not what we wanted to happen. Luckily, I had all the ingredients to make some bread myself.

I have never made a simple white loaf before so this was a good experience for me. It is good to go back to the basics sometimes, especially when you have been trying out a lot of big and complicated recipes recently. This is also a great starting point for anyone who has not made any bread before.

As this bread was mostly just for sandwiches and toast I didn't want to make anything too flavoursome. The classic flavour of the bread is great for breakfast, lunch, dinner or for a snack. It is so versatile and will go with mostly anything.

The best thing about making your own loaf is that you can decide how thin or thick you want the slices to be, and if you're anything like us, you'll like a nice thick piece of toast in the mornings. Maybe with some homemade jam.

Your homemade bread won’t contain any harsh chemicals or preservatives and so will likely not last quite as long as store bought bread. Make sure you wrap your bread up or keep it in an airtight container and it will last around 2-3 days. You can also freeze it if you aren't likely to get through it all in that time.

White Bread - Makes 2 Loaves

Ingredients:

6 Cups Plain Flour

1 tbsp Caster Sugar

½ tsp Salt 1 tbsp

Active Yeast

2 tbsp Soft Butter

2 Cup Hot Water

Method

Combine 2 cups of flour with sugar, salt and yeast.

Add the water and butter and mix until combined.

Stir in the remaining flour. Knead the dough for around 8-10 minutes.

Oil a large bowl and place the dough inside.

Turn the dough a few times to make sure it is covered in oil.

Cover the bowl and leave the dough to rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

While the dough is rising, prepare 2 loaf tins, by covering it with oil.

When the dough has risen, knead for another 5 minutes.

Cut the dough in half.

Transfer the two balls of dough into the loaf tins.

Cover and leave to rise for another 30 minutes, or until it had doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 200c.

Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes.

Remove from loaf tins and let cool.

Serve

Enjoy!
